Keep Pesky Summer Bugs Away with Citronella

Citronella Ceramic Candlepots

If you live in the northern hemisphere, you are probably looking forward to the summer months, when you can sit outside and enjoy a warm evening on your back patio. But with the warm weather, comes the bugs that can ruin any evening, especially if you’re cooking outdoors. Chase them away by lighting citronella candles.

These candles come from Illuminations. The large candle will burn up to 40 hours and costs about $20. You can buy citronella candles for under $5 at your local hardware store. Off! has its own brand, but it doesn’t come in a pretty candle pot.

If you’re the crafty type, you can make your own outdoor citronella bucket candles. This project is great if you need to recycle wax scraps from your old candles.

Measure the Smallest of Ingredients to the Barest Ounce

Measuring Spoon Scale

Although I am no professional chef, I do appreciate the value of this measuring spoon/mini-scale. For instance, there were many times where I added a “pinch” of an ingredient to a sauce without knowing exactly how much I put in. The result turned out fine. But every time I would make this sauce, it would turn out differently each time because of the variable factor of the measurement.

This measuring spoon was designed to weigh solids or liquids from 0.1 to 300g (0.005 to 10.5oz). That’s quite a spread in measurements! Available at Pro-Idee United Kingdom.

Easy Pour Flour and Sugar Container

Flour and Sugar Storage Container

This container isn’t nearly as pretty as the cannisters I’ve seen online, but it will keep the bugs out of your flour and sugar while allowing you to pour from it like you would a carafe. The top has two spouts: one for pouring and one for measuring. I can’t think of a better gift for an avid baker. Holds 5 pounds.
